Solomon Islands: Health and Education

Education opportunities in Solomon Islands

The University of Papua New Guinea has recently opened a campus in Honiara, as part of the Solomon Islands College of Higher Education (the Solomon Islands National University). The University has four campuses: Kukum, Panatina, Ranadi and Poitete, and runs courses up to degree level. The other main tertiary education facility in Solomon Islands is the University of the South Pacific, which has a campus in Honiara. The university is also a partner of POLHN, offering courses via distance learning to people across the Pacific.

Continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities

An ideal option for continued education in Solomon Islands is POLHN. This offers distance and online learning in the health fields through partners such as USP, which sponsors some courses. POLHN also has a number of learning centres based across the Solomons:
  • Honiara: School of Nursing and Allied Health Science National Referral Hospital
  • Western Province: Gizo Hospital
  • Malaita: Kiluufi Hospital
  • Choiseul: Taro Hospital
  • Malaita: Atoifi Adventist Hospital
If students are unable to access the learning centres or the internet, they can also have course materials sent to them for use on CDs. For more information on POLHN in Solomon Islands, contact Lorraine Satorara (email here). Many people from the Solomon Islands also travel abroad for further education, particularly to Fiji National University (FNU). In fact, Solomon Islanders represent one of the largest foreign nationalities at FNU.Additionally, each year students from Solomon Islands are given the chance to study overseas in Australia thanks to the Australia Awards. Around 125 Solomon Islanders are given these scholarships every year, enabling them to travel to Australia and cover the cost of their living and education there.
