Opportunities in the Cook Islands
The main hospital in the Cook Islands is Raratonga Hospital, located in the capital city of Aravua. There is also Aitutaki Hospital, which is a smaller district centre.
The University of the South Pacific (USP) has a campus in the Cook Islands, in Tupapa, Raratonga. It offers both undergraduate and Masters degrees in fields such as public health, business administration, small island development and economic policy.
Continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities
Health professionals seeking to further their skills and knowledge can undertake further studies at the USP Cook Islands campus. The campus also offers distance and internet-based learning, where students can attend lectures via live stream.
USP is also a partner of POLHN, which is a dedicated e-learning platform for health professionals in Pacific island countries. Offering courses in subjects such as mental health, kids’ physical activity, and diabetes, this is an ideal way to keep up-to-date with the latest medical knowledge. These courses are specifically targeted at those living in countries such as the Cook Islands, and sponsored degrees are even available. POLHN courses are usually undertaken over the internet, however if access is not possible, students can learn from CDs or in a dedicated POLHN centre.
There is one POLHN centre in the Cook Islands, located at Raratonga Centre. It is fitted with facilities such as computers, desks and scanners. For more information on POLHN in the Cook Islands, contact Maru Willie (email here).
