Terere Takai is the focal point and country coordinator for Kiribati. She recently spoke to POLHN staff to share some of her experiences.
What is your professional and educational background?
I have a Certificate in computing skills from Kiribati Institute of Technology. I worked for the Ministry of Health as an Assistant Graphic Designer but my passion for POLHN coordinator evolved over time. I loved providing assistance to health workers, I didn’t know it would translate into a career!
How long have you been working with POLHN?
I have been working as a POLHN Coordinator for more than 11 years now. I love what I do; every day brings new challenges keeping me on my toes.
What does your role within POLHN entail?
I am a full time POLHN coordinator for Kiribati, my role is to enhance continuing professional development (CPD) to ensure health workers are competent in their profession, which improves the quality of care in health service delivery. Other than that, I organise POLHN committee meetings, advertise for available courses each semester and help health professionals with POLHN sign up and other computing skills.
What is your most memorable POLHN experience?
My most recent memorable experience was when I established a new POLHN Centre at Betio Hospital, when we also held a graduation ceremony. It was truly an amazing feeling to see four of my students graduate: three from Pacific Paramedical Training Centre and one from the Fiji National University (FNU) Masters in Public Health.
What is your favourite part about being a POLHN focal point?
I loved spending time with other focal points during our Cross Country Training and Country coordinator workshop. There we came together as a team and shared ideas, experiences, challenges and discussed future directions for POLHN.
