Palau: Health and Education

Opportunities in Palau

Palau health centres around its hospitals and medical centres. It has one public hospital: Belau National Hospital. The hospital has 80 beds, with a total of 402 staff. It also houses Palau’s Ministry of Health. Other private centres include Belau Medical Clinic, Pacific Medical Supply and Family Surgical Clinic.

Palau’s only higher education institution is the Palau Community College. Located in Koror, it offers associate degrees in fields such as nursing, business and liberal arts.

Continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities

Due to the country’s isolation, many students from Palau choose to undertake their tertiary education abroad, most commonly at San Diego State University in the US and the University of the South Pacific in Fiji.

Another option for Palauans to continue their professional development is through distance and online learning. Offering a wide variety of courses targeted at health workers from Palau, POLHN is an ideal option for many. For those without access to the internet, these courses can be obtained via CD, or students can visit the POLHN learning centre at Belau National Hospital. For further information on POLHN in Palau, contact Ms Sunshine Garcia (email here).

Scholarships to study abroad are also an ideal opportunity for Palauans seeking CPD opportunities. The Australia Awards are one of the leading scholarships of this kind. Funded by the Australian Government, they offer the opportunity for Palauans to study at universities abroad through one of two programs: the Australia Awards Pacific Scholarships and the Australia Awards Leadership Program. The Pacific Scholarships are for study at institutions in the Pacific region, while the Leadership Program provides scholarships for postgraduate study in Australia. Both programs are available to Palauans. For more information, visit the Australia Awards website.
