This course is inspired by the WHO Healthy Islands Recognition Programme, started in 2011. It focuses on the resource booklet on healthy islands, which was developed by health promotion experts and has been transformed to a POLHN online course for Pacific Island public health workers.

It focuses on the resource booklet on healthy islands, which was developed by health promotion experts and has been transformed to a POLHN online course for Pacific Island public health workers. This course is intended to be a resource in the Pacific islands to implement low-cost, sustainable, and effective health promotion programmes and projects.

After completing this online course, students will be able to:

  • Define health promotion and explain its key principles
  • Describe the various determinants that affect health
  • Recognize the contribution of systems thinking to the future of health promotion
  • Explain what a settings-based approach to health is
  • Describe the core components of the Healthy Islands Vision
  • Recognize the alignment between health promotion and the healthy islands vision
  • Identify the Yanuca Island Declaration and its importance
  • Identify future trends likely to affect health promotion delivery

Getting Started
The course is structured around a simplified health promotion planning and evaluation cycle. Each of the modules is introduced and then illustrated with best-practice examples from the Pacific, while the evaluation section draws on examples from several projects.

Module - 1: Key Principles in Health Promotion
In this module, you will learn some of the fundamentals of health promotion and how they align with Healthy Islands.
Module - 2: Healthy Settings and Healthy Islands
This module will introduce you to the Healthy Islands vision and give you an understanding how it aligns with health promotion (module 1) and how the vision can lead to better health outcomes.
Module - 3: Characteristics for Successful Healthy Islands Programs
Now that we've covered the basic principles of health promotion and Healthy Islands, in this module, we will draw on Pacific examples of health promotion to identify characteristics of effective Healthy Islands initiatives.
Module - 4: Situation Analysis
The early modules set the foundation in terms of health promotion and Healthy Islands principles, and characteristics for successful Healthy Islands programs. In this module we will introduce the health promotion/action research process, and explore the initial stage, "Situation Analysis" in detail.
Module - 5: Planning and Implementation
Now that you've covered situation analysis, the next stages in the process are planning and implementation.
Module - 6: Evaluation
Measuring how a project is developed and implemented and whether or not it achieved its objectives and goals is often overlooked. However, it is an essential driver of the process and vital for determining the effectiveness, or otherwise, of the project.
Module - 7: Healthy Islands and your Future Practice
In this module, we will review some of the key messages from earlier modules and conclude the course by considering future directions for health promotion and Healthy Islands.
