The purpose of this free online community-based rehabilitation (CBR) training course is to help participants find a personal answer to the question, “What does empowerment mean to CBR?” We all experience empowerment differently, but it’s values are universal. The design is purposefully self-directed to be of value to anyone interested in CBR or empowerment. The successful participant will be able to use this learning journey to better empower themselves, others, and their communities.

This free online community-based rehabilitation (CBR) training course consists of three parts. The first two parts provide complementary perspectives on CBR empowerment i.e., meaning and model. The third part shifts the focus to the CBR context in the Pacific and student reflection on their personal understanding of empowerment. In conclusion, participants are encouraged to share their personal experiences and informed observations on the larger meaning of empowerment, the Pacific Way. Purpose of course: The purpose of this course is to help participants find a personal answer to the question, "What does empowerment mean to CBR?" We all experience empowerment differently, but it's values are universal. The design of this online training for CBR is purposefully self-directed to be of value to anyone interested in CBR or empowerment. The successful participant will be able to use this learning journey to better empower themselves, others, and their communities.

After completing this course, the students shall be able to learn:

  • Empowerment stories from CBR in the Pacific;
  • Overview of empowerment theory, model, and practice;
  • Comprehension check; Discussion Threads;
  • Links to related subject matter; and
  • Student feedback on course content and design.

Getting Started
Parts 1 & 2 offer complementary perspectives on empowerment. Choose either to begin the journey. You can also choose lessons within each part in sequence, or an order of your choosing: complete all of the activities in each lesson, complete parts 1 & 2 before moving on to part 3, consult the Study Guide for additional information and resources. Your task is to engage the community voices you encounter on this learning journey. Listen, reflect, and respond to their knowledge and experience. Bring the personal and practice aspects of empowerment together in your own mind. Clarify your personal understanding of empowerment, reflect upon your own experiences free online CBR course. And finally, share your thoughts and stories in the discussion threads.
Module 1: Empowerment Stories: Lived CBR Experience
Module 1 offers a selection of empowerment stories from the perspective of people with disabilities and their families, CBR practitioners and students. Students view videos, read case studies, review the study guide, and explore links to supplemental sites and documents. Each empowerment story lesson concludes with a series of reflection questions and two rating activities.
Module 2: Empowerment in CBR
Module 2 offers a model for understanding the structure of empowerment in CBR. Lesson begin in general definitions, expand in a systems approach to empowerment theory, and conclude with an exploration of its application within the current CBR guidelines. Students review presented materials, study CBR Guideline manuals, and answer basic concept questions in a comprehension check.
Module 3: Reflection
Module 3 encourages the student to reflect on modules 1 & 2 and begin to synthesis new information with their own personal experience with, and understanding of empowerment. Module 3 of this online CBR course with free certificate concludes with an expanded menu of reflection questions aimed at CBR, empowerment, and student synthesis and extension of these concepts.
