Young people and adolescents are an inherently diverse group, with varying needs as per their age and context. Programmes aimed at facilitating the transition of young people into adulthood, meeting their variable needs, and development of their individual talents and capabilities, therefore, are of utmost significance.

Programmes aimed at facilitating the transition of young people into adulthood, meeting their variable needs, and development of their individual talents and capabilities, are therefore of utmost significance. This course looks at what these programmes are and how to implement them. This course has been adapted from Global Health eLearning (GHeL) Center under a creative commons license and modified according to prevailing trends in the Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICTs).

After completion of this course, students will be able to understand:

  • The principles of effective youth programming;
  • The tailored programmatic initiatives and approaches for the improvement of the sexual and reproductive health of young people; and
  • How to locate and use resources for supporting both the monitoring and evaluation of programmes, and the scale-up of successful approaches.

Getting Started
This course includes an overview of developmental strategies and approaches that enhance and safeguard the sexual and reproductive health of young people. The course also includes case studies that reflect the success of such programmes.
Module - 1: Introduction to Adolescent and Youth Sexual and Reproductive Health (AYSRH) Programming
Module 1 includes the definitions, and the background of the AYSRH programming, reasons why effective youth programming is necessary, meaningful youth engagement, gender inequality faced by young women and men, and the impact of gender norms on youth programmes.
Module - 2: Key Design Consideration
This section covers how to understand your target population, and programmatic design considerations. It also looks at tools and resources, conducting an assessment with youth, identification of the most appropriate programmatic approaches, and the monitoring and evaluation of these programme considerations.
Module - 3: Improving Young People's Knowledge, Attitudes, Skills, and Intentions (KASI)
This module is concerned with the comprehensive sexuality education, school-based sexuality education, parent/caregiver involvement, mHealth/eHealth, mass media, social marketing, and case studies associated with the topic.
Module - 4: Improving Access to Services
This part encompasses topics including, mainstreaming adolescent-friendly elements into existing services, mobile outreach, youth-friendly pharmacies, community-based delivery, post-abortion care, human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccinations, and case studies associated with the topic.
Module - 5: Structural Interventions
Module 5 covers the aspects of community engagement, sports programmes, significance of keeping the girls in school, cash transfer processes, economic empowerment programmes, and case studies.
Module 6: The Value of Investing in Young People Within Asia & Pacific

This section focuses on the importance of the health of young people. Young people make up a significant proportion of each country's population and comprise about 20% of the world's people. Furthermore, the module features topics like Sexually Transmitted Infections, HIV/AIDS and Reproductive Tract Infections, Sexual Violence and Exploitation etc.

Final Assessment Exam

This section contains the final exam of the course, which is mandatory in order to achieve the certificate.
